All versions of the game follow the film’s plot but include characters not appearing in the movie that will expand upon it. Following the release of the Spider-Man movie, the game sees Peter Parker take on his role as Spider-Man. The story behind this game is made following the story of the entire movie.
The console versions of the game were received positively, with critics praising the realistic Manhattan setting and web-swinging mechanics. The handheld versions received mixed reviews. The game was followed by Spider-Man 3, itself based on the 2007 film of the same name.
Gameplay
The PS2 version of this game is played from a third-person perspective. The game’s open world is set in Manhattan, Roosevelt Island, Ellis Island, and Liberty Island located in New York City. Players take on the role of Spider-Man here and complete the missions and objectives of the game. The gameplay of the game is divided into multiple chapters and has its objectives, such as buying upgrades for the game’s main character or earning a certain number of points by completing side missions. These side missions are given by random walkers within the game map and mainly fight criminals and stop speeding cars by jumping on them, taking wounded people to hospital, etc. Each mission has a story mission related to the main plot.
Players of the game can climb walls and fight enemies using a variety of combos. They use the character’s “spider-sense” to avoid frontal attacks, including gunfire. Spider-Man’s web is simulated in three dimensions thanks to the game’s physics-based algorithm. The developers create a new game mechanic here, unlike previous Spider-Man games like jumping or flying, it’s completely different. In-scale fighting here is much more complex, as it requires the player to carefully time his attacks. After completing the game’s main story, a bonus mode is unlocked inside a store room, where the player can fight enemies, as well as an exclusive villain, Calypso.
